Council Pushes for Permanent Tree Controls

In February 2018, Schedule 9 to the Significant Landscape Overlay (SLO9) was applied on an interim basis for 12 months.

SLO9 works to protect trees on all land included in the Neighbourhood Residential Zone (NRZ), General Residential Zone (GRZ), Residential Growth Zone (RGZ) and Low Density Residential Zone (LDRZ) that was not already covered by the existing SLO1-8. Residents should check the planning controls that apply to their land before considering tree removal as a planning permit is generally required (specific exemptions apply).

The expiry date for SLO9 has now been extended seven times by the State Government, most recently in June 2024, providing continuous protection of trees across the municipality since 2018 and helping to retain existing and future tree canopy. SLO9 will cease to have effect after 23 December 2024 unless a further extension is granted by the State Government.

SLO9 has remained interim while the State Government completes a review of vegetation controls in the Victoria Planning Provisions. This review is intended to establish a State-wide approach on how planning tools for tree protection are used.

Council is still advocating for SLO9 to be approved on a permanent basis to protect the neighbourhood character of the municipality.
