The Strand Jetty is set to receive a makeover as its iconic architectural sails are replaced in the coming weeks.
Council will invest $1.2 million in the shade structure replacement, bringing life back to the almost 25-year-old structure.
Acting Mayor Paul Jacob said the 70-metre jetty would be closed to the public during the works, which would include the removal and replacement of the old aluminium shade structure.
"In recent years Council has invested heavily in maintenance on our city's beloved jetty, including replacing decking boards, lights and handrail works," Cr Jacob said.
"As part of the engineering assessment conducted on the jetty when the works were completed, it identified that it was time to give the roof structure a new lease of life, which is why Council is undertaking these works.
"The original roof structure has reached its end of life and is ready for replacement, so it will be great to see some life brought back to the Jetty with its vibrant roof back in full force."
Divisional Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project would involve barging in the 12-tonne structure, which would then be craned into place in two pieces.
The replacement of the sails is set to be quite a spectacle for the public, craning two 6-tonne roof structures into place from the ocean," Cr Greaney said.
"The Strand Jetty is a Townsville favourite for locals and visitors alike, providing a fantastic recreational space for the community year-round.
"When we celebrated the Strand's 20th birthday in 2019, we looked back on just how much of a role it plays in the community aspect of life here in Townsville, including our wonderful jetty.
"Whether it be the recreational fishers who use the jetty daily or as a viewpoint of Magnetic Island and our city, this closure will ensure we can continue using the jetty for years to come.
"While the works are set to take a couple of months to complete, it's vital to bring some life and colour back to this amazing asset, so we appreciate the community's patience and understanding."
The Strand jetty shade sail replacement works are scheduled to take place from Monday 24 June 2024 and are expected to take nine (9) weeks, weather and conditions permitting.
