Devonport City Council is pleased to announce the reappointment of Mr. Matthew Atkins as General Manager for a further five-year term. Mr. Atkins has been instrumental in guiding the Council and the City through significant growth, having joined the organisation as an executive in 2007 and serving as General Manager since 2019.
Under Mr. Atkins' leadership, Devonport has continued to transform as a thriving regional city with notable achievements including the successful completion of the Waterfront Precinct and Novotel hotel, a key piece of Councils ambitious LIVING CITY strategy. As an organisation Council has performed strongly from a financial perspective, whilst maintaining low rate increases and implementing an ambitious digital transformation program.
Mayor Alison Jarman expressed her confidence in Mr. Atkins' continued leadership, stating, "Devonport City Council is becoming recognised as a leader both within the local government sector and more broadly and Matthew's dedication and strategic vision have been crucial to this success. We look forward to building upon the solid foundation established during his tenure."
Upon his reappointment, Mr. Atkins commented, "I enjoy working with the current Mayor and Councillors and appreciate the support and opportunity they have given me to continue to lead the organisation. Council has led some significant change within the city with further ambitious plans for the future, which is exciting to be a part of."
"We have great people across our diverse organisation, and it is a privilege to continuing working with them to serve the community." said Mr Atkins
Originally having worked in the private sector, Mr. Atkins brings over two decades of local government experience, having previously served as Deputy General Manager at Devonport City Council and Director of Infrastructure at Burnie City Council. His extensive background and commitment to the community position him well to lead the Council in its ongoing initiatives.
Recognising the broadening role of local government and in line with contemporary practice, Mr Atkins' title will change from General Manager to Chief Executive Officer from 1 January.
