Bayside Council welcomes the State Governments proposal to help house our growing population but is calling for any new development to be backed by the necessary infrastructure including sufficient open space.
Council made two submissions to the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on its recently announced initiatives known as Transport Orientated Development (TOD), and Low/Mid Rise Housing.
These submissions address Council's concerns and recommendations regarding the State Government's proposals, which include TOD around, Kogarah, Rockdale, Banksia and Turrella railway stations, and more medium density housing around many other centres in Bayside.
Council is largely supportive of the NSW Government's program but is determined to ensure:
- boundaries of the areas where controls apply are well defined
- robust stakeholder consultation prior to development
- support for an affordable housing contribution
- minimal impact on the local character of the area
- necessary supporting infrastructure is in place including sufficient open space
Mayor Saravinovski said:
"Council is largely supportive of the State Government's program to help house our growing population," Bayside Mayor Bill Saravinovski said.
"Bayside Council has a strong record of exceeding its housing targets and supports additional housing being developed to accommodate its growing and changing community.
"However, it is important that new housing is delivered in a way that creates a good quality of life for new residents and builds great communities."
