Council is pleased to announce it has secured $81,900 in funding through the NSW Government's Open Streets Program led by Transport for NSW. The funding will support an exciting new project called "Leeton Alive", aimed at activating streets and public spaces in Leeton.
Project locations will include Church Street, Jarrah Street, and Chelmsford Place, with a variety of activities and events scheduled to take place between 19 October and 30 November 2024. The "Leeton Alive" project aims to boost vibrancy, support local businesses, and help create safer community gathering spaces. Supported through temporary street closures, this project will facilitate community events, outdoor dining, markets and creative activations.
Mayor Cr Tony Reneker is looking forward to seeing our Leeton streets brought to life, stating, "We are grateful to the NSW Government for its support in activating Leeton's public spaces. The 'Leeton Alive' project will bring a new level of vibrancy to our town centre, supporting local businesses and providing safer, enjoyable spaces for our community to gather and celebrate in. We look forward to working closely with local businesses and community groups to bring this vision to life."
Cr Krystal Maytom, Portfolio Lead for Tourism, added, "The 'Leeton Alive' project is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the unique charm and community spirit of Leeton. These events and activities will not only draw residents together but also attract visitors, enhancing our town's appeal as a vibrant and welcoming destination."
Marketing & Promotions Coordinator Toneale O'Connell highlighted the community engagement aspect of the project, stating, "Residents can look forward to exciting new ways to experience Leeton's streets and town centre in 2024. The 'Leeton Alive' project is all about creating lively, interactive spaces where people can connect, enjoy outdoor dining, participate in markets, and engage in various creative activities. It's a wonderful opportunity for us to transform our streets into vibrant public spaces for everyone to enjoy."
Minister for Roads, Arts, Music and the Night-Time Economy, Jobs and Tourism, John Graham, said, "We're excited to support this event in Leeton."
"Too often our main streets are something we drive through, rather than drive to. Our streets are a critical part of our public and social infrastructure. Great streets make great towns and centres and reflect the local community and culture.
