Armidale Regional Council (ARC) is seeking input from the community in relation to its draft Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to ensure it best represents Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Armidale region.
The 'Reflect' RAP is a major strategy for Council to identify actions to assist and involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the region.
Based on Reconciliation Australia's four RAP types – Reflect, Innovate, Stretch and Elevate – having a RAP allows organisations to continuously develop their reconciliation commitments.
"The RAP should signify the Council's acknowledgment of historical injustices and a willingness to work toward a more inclusive and equitable future," said Cyril Green, ARC's Aboriginal Community Development Officer.
"We want to hear from as many members of the region's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as possible, to ensure the RAP best represents their needs and interests for the next four years.
"Council is working closely with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to maximise their input on this plan."
Dates for draft RAP community consultation are:
- Guyra Local Aboriginal Land Council, 187 Falconer St Guyra, 19 August 2024
- Aboriginal Culture Centre and Keeping Place, 96-104 Kentucky St, Armidale, 20 August 2024
- Armidale War Memorial Library, Unit 2/182 Rusden St, Armidale 21 August 2024
All the consultation sessions will be run from 10am to 1pm.
Council has previously had an Aboriginal Action Plan but is moving to a RAP to be in line with Reconciliation Australia.
The development of a RAP by ARC represents a commitment to reconciliation, social justice, and equity, and it provides a framework for concrete actions and initiatives to advance these goals within the community and the organisation itself.
"This draft 'Reflect' RAP is a pivotal step for our Council in acknowledging and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities," said ARC Mayor Sam Coupland.
"I encourage everyone to come along to the community consultation because your input is vital on this strategy. We want this RAP to be a framework for our Council to identify and implement actions that will support and engage our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
"It is through this commitment that we will strive to foster a more inclusive and respectful region."
