Clarence Valley Council has publicly demonstrated its show of support for fair pay and better working conditions for nurses and midwives in New South Wales after councillors unanimously supported a Notice of Motion put forward by Councillor Allison Whaites at the December 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting.
In early January, Clarence Valley Council's General Manager Laura Black wrote to NSW Treasurer the Hon. Daniel Mookhey and State Member for Clarence Richie Williamson, urging their support for the pay and conditions claims.
"It is crucial that we stand behind our nurses and midwives, particularly those at Grafton Base and Maclean District Hospitals," Clarence Valley Mayor Ray Smith said.
"There is no doubt that nurses and midwives in NSW deserve fair compensation and better working conditions to ensure they can provide the high level of care our community deserves.
"By voicing our support, we are sending a clear message to both the government and our healthcare workers that we are united in backing them."
Since mid-2024, public sector nurses and midwives have been advocating for improved pay and nurse-to-patient ratios, continuing to raise their voices for meaningful change.
