Townsville City Council soars into the future with a brand-new mascot – the mighty bin chicken.
From scavenging scraps to strutting their stuff on street corners, the bin chicken, also known as the Australian white ibis, has become an undeniable icon of the city.
A Council spokesperson said Townsville is a vibrant, dynamic city, and Council wanted a mascot which reflected that.
"The bin chicken embodies the tenacity, resourcefulness, and, let's be honest, the occasional cheekiness that defines Townsville," they said.
"Council is confident this bold move will not only boost local pride but also attract a new wave of tourism.
"We see this as a fantastic opportunity to put Townsville on the map – as the bin chicken capital of the world.
"We're developing a range of bin chicken-themed merchandise, from plushies to stubby holders, and even exploring bin chicken-watching tours."
Council acknowledged there may be some initial squawks about the decision.
"We understand bin chickens can be a bit enthusiastic when it comes to rummaging through bins," Council's spokesperson said.
"But that's all part of their charm. They remind us to be responsible with our waste and they play a vital role in our ecosystem.
"We're encouraging residents to embrace the bin chicken spirit.
"Get out there, spread your wings, and be proud to be a Townsville local – just maybe hold onto your lunch a little tighter."
