Council Urges Immediate Funding for Sydney Road Upgrade

Mitchell Shire Council is intensifying its advocacy efforts to secure $40 million in Federal Government funding to seal and upgrade the 5.57km stretch of Old Sydney Road from the Mitchell/Hume boundary to Camerons Lane in Beveridge.

This critical infrastructure project is a top priority in Council's $50 million roads package for the upcoming Federal election.

Council has been advocating for funding for Old Sydney Road for many years, recognising the challenges this road presents to our community. The upgrade would address significant safety and usability issues, ensuring reliable alternative north-south access for Victoria's fastest growing communities.

A truck fire on the Hume Freeway on Friday 6 December underscored the urgent need for investment in the local road network. Traffic was initially diverted to Merriang Road, where lane restrictions due to roadworks caused significant delays. A second redirection down Old Sydney Road resulted in a truck blocking this critical diversion route. The incident highlighted the fragility of the current road network and the pressing need for upgrades.
