The City of Adelaide congratulates the State Government on its decision to protect the Park Lands and choose an alternative site for the relocation of the South Australian Police Mounted Operations Unit.
SAPOL had initially identified Park 21 West / Mirnu Wirra as the preferred site for its new base, with its current facilities at the Thebarton Barracks to make way for the new Women's and Children's Hospital.
The City of Adelaide had been in regular contact with the State Government and had constructive talks about the potential impact the eight-hectare SAPOL development would have on the local community and the environment.
Park 21 West / Mirnu Wirra is deemed a 'Key Biodiversity Area' with significant native flora and fauna which has been carefully maintained over a number of years.
As well as stabling up to 40 horses, the proposed facility on the Park Lands would have included offices, accommodation, storage sheds and high-security fencing to house various business units and facilities.
Council unanimously opposed SAPOL's preferred location. There was also compelling community reaction, with several rallies organised at the proposed site and petitions asking the State Government to find alternative sites to house the greys.
Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith thanked South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas for choosing an alternative new site, rather than developing Park Lands.
"I congratulate the South Australian Government for maintaining its commitment to protect the irreplaceable and unique Adelaide Park Lands," said the Lord Mayor.
"The Premier has demonstrated he will listen to the community and show strong leadership to make the right decision.
"I would also like to thank the Member for Adelaide Lucy Hood, for her unwavering advocacy and support for the Park Lands during this process."
The City of Adelaide will work with SAPOL to find temporary agistment locations for their horses while the new permanent facility is constructed.
