At last night's Griffith City Council meeting, Councillor Simon Croce was honoured for his more than 20 years of dedicated service to the community. His family joined him at the meeting, where he was formally recognised for his long-standing commitment to local government, more specifically the community of Griffith.
First elected on 27 March 2004, Councillor Croce has been an active and passionate voice on Council. Throughout his time on Council, he contributed to a wide range of key projects and initiatives and served as Deputy Mayor from 22 September 2020 to 28 September 2021. Councillor Croce also played a crucial role on many important committees, including the Griffith Regional Aquatic and Leisure Centre Committee, Traffic Committee, Fairey Firefly Memorial Advisory Committee, Skateboard Advisory Committee, and the Floodplain Management Committee, among others.
One of his notable achievements was advocating for the Griffith Yoogali shared bicycle track and bridge, which is currently under construction and will serve as a vital link for the community.
During his time as Councillor, Councillor Croce explained his motivation for serving in an interview during the 2016 elections, saying, "I decided to nominate as a Councillor as I feel there was so much more that needs to be done, and it's no use sitting back complaining without having a go yourself."
After two decades of service, Councillor Croce has decided not to run in the upcoming election, marking the conclusion of his significant contribution to local government. He expressed his heartfelt thanks to his family, Council staff, the community that supported him over the years, and the Councillors and Mayors with whom he has served with.
