Bega Valley Shire Councillors have supported a motion by Councillor Simon Daly to explore a new crisis housing solution for the area.
The motion proposed investigating a Local Approvals Policy to allow moveable dwellings as crisis accommodation without formal approval.
"There is no doubt the shire is experiencing a housing shortage and we need to explore every avenue to provide safe and sustainable options for people in need," Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick said.
"Today's motion reinforces Council's commitment to addressing the housing shortage, however also recognises there are limitations to what we can do.
"While this is a positive step forward, we urge the community to understand that planning decisions made at the local government level must align with NSW Government planning regulations.
"Staff will now finalise their investigation into the scope of a local approvals policy that could exempt moveable dwellings from certain approval requirements when used exclusively for crisis accommodation.
"They will also consult with the Affordable Housing Implementation Group before reporting back to Council in the New Year."
The report will also include insights from other councils trialling similar initiatives, and will explore the benefits, opportunities and risks of adopting such a policy.
"Today's resolution aligns with the intent of the Bega Valley Affordable Housing Strategy, which aims to increase the availability of affordable housing options, particularly for low to moderate income households," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.
"However, as we review case studies from other councils to identify best practices for moveable dwellings as part of a housing solution, it is clear we are still bound by NSW Government planning regulations.
"Thanks to this motion, we will continue investigating a way forward while working to implement our long-term Affordable Housing Strategy.
"A problem as complex as the acute housing shortage being experienced in our region needs a multifaceted approach that steers away from placing all our eggs in one basket.
"I am confident that by moving forward through collaboration with all government tiers, interest groups and the community, we will see more affordable housing options in the Bega Valley."
The Bega Valley Affordable Housing Strategy emphasises the urgent need for diverse housing options to support the shire's most vulnerable residents. For more information, visit Council's website.
