Several councils' refusal to celebrate Australia Day on January 26 is divisive and out of touch with the pride felt by the vast majority of Australians.
"It's outrageous that some Councils are deliberately refusing to take part in the celebrations on Australia Day, a day that should unite all Australians," said the Shadow Minister for Local Government, Bev McArthur.
"Their actions are not just an attack on the day itself, but on the values of pride and community that Australia Day represents."
Recent figures show that of the 79 Councils in Victoria, 47 (60%) are hosting or involved in Australia Day events. However, 28 (35%) Councils have intentionally avoided holding celebrations on January 26.
Additionally, while 40 Councils (51%) will hold Citizenship ceremonies, at least 25 (32%) deliberately refuse to do so on the national day, choosing instead to hold them earlier in the week.
The latest data from the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) showing that 69% of Australians support celebrating Australia Day, up from 63% last year.
The Shadow Minister continued, "These Councils are ignoring the clear wishes of the majority of Australians who want to celebrate their country and its achievements."
"Communities across Victoria deserve the chance to come together and celebrate. Councils should reflect this in their actions, not push divisive political agendas."
"All Councils should reconsider their stance and participate in Australia Day celebrations, ensuring the day remains one of unity and national pride."
