Court Nearly Triples EPA's Noisy Vehicle Fine

A Bendigo man has turned an $1100 fine from EPA Victoria into a court penalty of more than $3,000 after his Holden sedan was reported for excessive noise at Long Gully.

The man was charged with failing to produce a certificate to show the car had passed a noise compliance test, and then failed to appear in the Bendigo Magistrate's Court when the case came up.

Police reported the noisy Holden to EPA Victoria on 20 May 2023, after hearing it on Energetic St, Long Gully. EPA issued the man with a notice requiring him to have the car tested, make any necessary repairs, and produce a Certificate of Compliance by 26 June 2023.

When the case came to court on 5 August 2024, the Magistrate convicted the California Gully man, fined him $2,500 and ordered him to pay $502 in court costs.

While the court case is complete, the man is still required to provide EPA with a certificate of compliance from an approved motor vehicle tester.
