Crash Closes Road, Investigation Underway in Williamtown

An investigation is underway, and a major road remains closed southbound following a crash near Newcastle Airport earlier today.

About 4.35am today (Wednesday 28 August 2024), emergency services were called to Nelson Bay Road, Williamtown, following reports of a car fire.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended the scene and were told a vehicle had crashed into a utility pole before igniting.

It is believed the driver of the vehicle left the scene prior to the arrival of police.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Ausgrid have been notified and have commenced works to repair the damaged utility pole.

Nelson Bay Road will remain closed southbound for several hours as officers investigate the incident.

Motorists are urged to use Cabbage Tree Road and Tomago Road between the Pacific Highway and Newcastle Airport.
