Stonnington City Council understands that the Stonnington community highly values its recreational space. With this in mind, the Council recently acquired the property at 9 Scott Grove and has decided to establish an interim park on the site as a priority, to best ensure timely community enjoyment of this new public asset.
Cr Melina Sehr, Mayor of Stonnington, said that "Creating more open space in Stonnington is a fantastic outcome for our community. Parks and green spaces are vital for wellbeing, and we're excited to deliver this new public space for residents to enjoy while we plan for its long-term future."
Cr Jamie Bell, Tooronga Ward Councillor says "Creating more open space for our community is a priority for the Council. The acquisition of this property allows us to deliver much-needed open space for residents to enjoy. While we work towards a long-term vision for the site, this interim park will provide immediate benefits—offering a place for relaxation, connection, and recreation. We look forward to seeing the community make the most of this new public space."
The uniquely large landholding is circa 3,934 square metres in size, which is a similar size to the Serrell Street Park in Malvern East.
The prioritised delivery of an interim park will involve the demolition of all existing structures in May-June 2025, immediately followed by the removal of some existing vegetation, site levelling, remediation, topsoil, grass and some seating options. Design and construction of an interim park will be completed by June 2026.
A long-term solution for the park will be the subject of a future Council decision and will require significant capital funding.
