  • Modern, eco-friendly housing designed for seniors and people with disabilities

The Crisafulli Government has unveiled 34 new completed social and affordable housing units in Chermside, marking a long-awaited milestone in addressing Queensland's housing crisis.

Delivered in partnership with community housing provider BHC and Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) this new build is a modern, sustainable complex designed to support both environmental goals and inclusive community living.

The six-storey building includes 28 one-bedroom and six two-bedroom apartments, innovatively designed by the award-winning Brisbane architectural group Ultralinea.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O'Connor praised the projects' commitment to social inclusion and environmental design.

"It has rainwater collection and storage to provide water for the gardens, and solar panels on the roof to power communal areas and the lifts.

"The communal spaces, including an alfresco rooftop and ground floor common spaces, help build a sense of community."

The complex has also been designed to accommodate seniors and people with disability.

"We know there are many people on the Social Housing Register who are older or who live with disability," Minister O'Connor said.

"These homes include one unit designed to Platinum level and 31 to Gold level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, meaning they have features such as level thresholds, provision for grab rails and wider doorways and hallways to accommodate mobility support devices.

Minister O'Connor confirmed more homes will be added to the Crisafulli Government's social housing construction pipeline, in partnership with community housing providers (CHPs).

"The Crisafulli Government has committed to refocusing the Housing Investment Fund (HIF) towards building new homes for Queenslanders.

"After a decade of social housing mismanagement and a failure to unleash the full potential of the community housing sector, a shocking 47,820 Queenslanders are left on the waitlist.

"With an unfunded pipeline of projects and a priority given to buying existing properties, the HIF was a hoax under Labor and Queenslanders on the social housing waitlist have paid a high price for this failure," Minister O'Connor said.

"Instead of adding to supply by building the homes Queenslanders desperately needed, like more of the ones we see here today, they diverted funds to buy existing properties.

"We are continuing to work with CHP partners to secure social housing projects and deliver this much-needed new supply as soon as possible."

BHC Chief Executive Officer Rebecca Oelkers said the project was the first of many.

"We are thrilled about this landmark project, constructed with the support of the Queensland Government's Housing Investment Fund," she said.

"This development, which will provide 34 homes, marks the beginning of our ambitious plan to deliver 600 homes as part of the BHC-QIC Consortium.

"With funding support from the Queensland Government and financing provided by Australian Retirement Trust and Housing Australia, we are committed to creating affordable housing solutions for our community.

"We look forward to welcoming our newest residents to these beautiful homes."
