A critical incident investigation has been declared after a crash involving a possible stolen car in Sydney's southwest earlier today.
About 10.40am (Wednesday 13 November 2024), officers attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command attempted to stop a Renault SUV, along Waminda Avenue, Campbelltown. This vehicle was involved in the theft of another vehicle earlier in the day in Middleton Grange.
When the driver failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.
The original pursuit was terminated a short time later along Moore Oxley Bypass and a police operation involving PolAir continued to monitor the vehicle.
About 11.15am, the Renault SUV ignored a red light at the intersection of Camden Valley Way and Denham Court Road, Denham Court an impacted with a black utility before hitting a traffic light pole. The 33-year-old male driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical but stable condition. He remains under police guard.
The 49-year-old male driver of the utility suffered minor injuries. He was taken to Liverpool Hospital as a precaution.
It will be alleged that the Renault SUV was involved in the theft of a blue Mercedes coupe parked in Kingsford Smith Avenue, Middleton Grange about 8.30am this morning. A male allegedly entered the car and attempted to drive away and was initially prevented by the 39-year-old female owner. During a struggle, the woman was dragged and pushed to the roadway and her vehicle left the area. The woman sustained minor injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital for observation.
The Mercedes was located unattended along Richmond Crescent, Campbelltown, by officers at 9.45am. The vehicle was seized for forensic examination. Early investigations have linked the male driver of the Renault SUV with the alleged theft of the Mercedes.
An independent critical incident investigation has been launched into the operation and is being led by officers from the Cumberland Police Area Command and the Crash Investigation Unit.
The incident is also subjected to an independent review from the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
