A critical incident investigation has been launched after a teenage boy was shot in the lower leg during a confrontation with police in the state's Central West this morning.
Officers from Central West Police District attended Calarie Road, Forbes, shortly after 3am (Monday 27 December 2021), in pursuit of a utility which had been reported stolen.
At Daroobalgie Road, the utility stopped, and the driver exited the vehicle, pursued by police on foot.
At this time, a second vehicle drove at police before police discharged their firearm.
A 16-year-old boy suffered a wound to his left calf and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted to The Children's Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition.
Two males – aged 14 and 16 – were arrested at the scene and taken to Parkes Police Station. They were not injured.
A fourth person was seen running from the scene, with police conducting inquiries to locate them with assistance from the Dog Unit.
A critical incident team from Orana Mid-West Police District will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the discharge of a police firearm.
That investigation will be subject to independent review.
No further details are available at this time; however, police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Daroobalgie Road remains closed and traffic diversions are in place.
