Critical incident investigation underway at Grafton

A critical incident investigation is underway after a shooting in the Northern Rivers region.

About 12pm today (Tuesday 31 May 2022), police attended a home on Smith Street, Grafton, responding to reports of an aggravated break and enter.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Police District attended and located a 25-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside a room.

Officers negotiated with the man before he allegedly confronted them with a machete.

During the confrontation, an officer discharged their firearm, with the man sustaining an injury to his stomach and arm.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition; his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A crime scene was established and a critical incident team from Northern Region Police District will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
