Compost from recycled organic products like food and garden waste is a natural solution.
By applying compost to fields and crops, farmers are seeing the benefit in their soils. This includes better water retention and improved nutrients.
We've released a series of podcasts and videos featuring farmers and agricultural advisors who are using compost to improve:
- soil health
- enhance drought resilience
- support sustainable farming.
What can you do
Every household can learn how they can improve their own food and garden waste recycling. Keeping contamination out of household recycling means more can go into compost for healthy soils.

We're supporting the key actors in the organic waste sector right from the start. From households sorting their waste, local councils with kerbside FOGO collections, to industry and the farmers who grow our food.
The Food Waste for Healthy Soils Fund initiative is recycling nutrients and carbon back into our soils.
New and upgraded organic recycling infrastructure will help process organic waste, including food organics and garden organics (FOGO) into products like compost.
The Fund supports the Australian Government's commitment to the 2030 National Waste Policy Action Plan targets.
