Cultural Fishing Haul And Blak Markets: Bayside

Bayside Council is hosting a market day and cultural fishing haul on Sunday 23 March in partnership with Blak Markets and the Gamay Rangers.

The day will include a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony, performances, workshops, and market stalls featuring First Nations artists, designers and small business owners.

The Gamay Rangers will be on hand to provide some background on this First Nations fishing practice that has been passed down for generations, and there will be an opportunity to participate in the event.

The cultural fishing haul typically takes place during the mullet season that runs from March to May each year when the fish make their yearly migration from rivers and estuaries to the open ocean along the east coast of Australia.

This has always been a source of healthy food for Aboriginal people and a fishing practice that has played out for generations.

This is the first time the Blak Markets will be run at Kyeemagh with 20 stallholders selling authentic Indigenous art, craft, bushfood, plants and clothing.

Blak Markets ensures you are buying directly from Indigenous business with 100 % profit going to the businesses.
