Cumberland City Council will once again encourage its residents to stand up and clean up their local area by participating in the Clean Up Australia Day initiative on Sunday 5 March 2023.
Clean Up Australia Day is Australia's largest community based environmental event, that gives participants an opportunity to keep their local community and surrounding areas litter and waste free.
Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake acknowledged the clean up as an important form of community education and engagement and a great way to care for the environment.
"The last two years have seen a significant increase in single-use plastics, alongside unprecedented numbers of face masks, takeaway coffee cups and food packaging littering our footpaths, parks, and waterways," she said.
"Clean Up Australia Day provides an opportunity for the community to learn about the things that harm our environment, change the way they think about their everyday habits, and take practical and positive action."
This year, Council will be holding multiple events across Cumberland City on Sunday 5 March, including Holroyd Gardens in Merrylands, Everley Park North in Auburn, Driftway Reserve in Pemulwuy, and Civic Park in Pendle Hill.
Participants will be provided with equipment at each location, with a barbecue lunch and refreshments provided at Holroyd Gardens.
