Curtin University has maintained its position as the world's second-ranked university and number one in Australia for mineral and mining engineering for the eighth year in a row in the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject.
The latest edition, released overnight, shows Curtin achieved a ranking in 31 narrow subject fields with 18 ranked in the top 200 globally.
Five Curtin subjects continued to be named among the top 50 on the planet: mineral and mining engineering (2nd), earth and marine science (37th), geology (39th), geophysics (42nd) and petroleum engineering (49th). Curtin also had nine subjects in the top 100 including architecture and built environment, civil and structural engineering, nursing and sport-related disciplines.
Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the results highlight Curtin's ongoing success.
"The QS World University Rankings by Subject offer the world's most popular source of comparative data about university performance, and I am delighted that Curtin continues its long run as the top Australian university and world's second-ranked for mineral and mining engineering," Professor Hayne said.
The 2024 results also saw Curtin's Medicine, English Language and Literature, and Linguistics courses enter the rankings for the first time.
Along with the top national ranking for mining and mineral engineering, Curtin continues to feature in the top five Australian rankings for earth and marine sciences, geophysics and geology - all at third position in Australia, and architecture and built environment at fifth.
Competition increased this year with a growing list of institutions being analysed for ranking and an increase in the number of institutions published in its rankings for the majority of narrow subjects.
The 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject considered more than 1,559 universities across 55 academic disciplines and five broad subject areas.
