Cyber Security Awareness in Darwin and Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police Cyber Crime is encouraging Territory businesses to attend cyber security information sessions in Darwin and Alice Springs during October Business Month 2021.

Territory seniors can also attend a free cyber security information session in Darwin and Alice Springs, delivered by the new Darwin Joint Cyber Security Centre Outreach Service, part of the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

Cybercriminals are targeting Australians at an unprecedented level to steal sensitive information and money, including through business email compromise and ransomware attacks.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Windebank said, "Cybercrime remains an enduring threat to Northern Territory businesses, in the past 12 months reported instances of Business Email Compromise have become increasingly common with Northern Territory Police currently responding to a report every 14 days with the average financial loss approaching $30,000."

"Whether you run a mid-sized organisation or operate with just a laptop and email account, a cyber-attack could affect you."

The free sessions for business cover how to improve your cyber security defences including email security; business continuity and how to prepare for and recover from a cyber-attack; and how you can assess your cyber security controls.

Taking the steps to protect against cyber threats will assist to minimise risk to your business information, operations, technology and reputation said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Windebank.

"Advice will include how to protect your digital devices; use public WiFi and social media safely; password management and how to recognise cyber scams."
