Cycling champion Nino Solari Commemorative Path officially opened

Nino Solari played a significant role in boosting the profile of professional cycling in South Australia.

The $150,000 Commemorative Path on Osmond Terrace is part of the Beulah Road Bicycle Boulevard Project.

The structure includes interpretive signage, display boards and custom artwork that recognise Nino's achievements and contributions to the sport of cycling and to community life in our City.

There is also:

• new pedestrian kerb ramps and wider pedestrian footpaths.
• dedicated cycling paths through the median;
• landscaping, including planting and irrigation within the Osmond Terrace median and at all four of the intersection's corners; and
• furniture, including these concrete benches, and bicycle repair station with bike stand, tools and pump – across the road on the side on the Norwood Police Station.

Mayor Bria said he was confident the Nino Solari Commemorative Path would provide a safe cycling and pedestrian route for many years to come.

"Nino was undoubtedly one of the most revered figures in South Australia's cycling history," he said.

"Nino was a very familiar face in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters, and his cycling prowess attracted thousands to the old Velodrome at Norwood.

Considered to be one of the greatest Australian cyclists and legend of the sport, Nino was more than just an elite athlete.

"He thrived in sharing his knowledge and love of cycling and this passion helped to turn young sports people into exceptional athletes, even helping to launch world-class cycling careers."

Nino's love of cycling filtered down to his son, David, who represented Italy in the sport at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea.
