Today, the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy was marked by a solemn ceremony and the unveiling of a commemorative memorial at East Point.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Governor-General Sam Mostyn AC, and survivors of Cyclone Tracy.

"I am deeply honoured to stand alongside survivors, leaders, and our community on this significant occasion, unveiling a memorial that carries such profound meaning," said Mrs. Finocchiaro.

"The Frangipani flower, woven into the memorial's design, tells a story of resilience-it bent and swayed in the fierce winds of Cyclone Tracy but stood firm, blooming again in the aftermath. It's a powerful symbol of our Territory's enduring strength."

At the heart of the memorial is a shade sculpture, offering a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance. Its thoughtful design ensures it will serve as a place for generations to come to pause, honour, and reflect on this defining chapter of our history.

"This memorial isn't just for the survivors-it's for every Territorian, now and in the future, to understand and acknowledge the profound impact Cyclone Tracy had on our city and our people," Mrs. Finocchiaro added.

Cyclone Tracy struck Darwin on Christmas Day, 1974, becoming one of Australia's most catastrophic natural disasters. Wind gusts exceeding 217 km/h left devastation in their wake, claiming 66 lives, destroying over 70% of Darwin's buildings, and displacing tens of thousands of residents.

"Tracy was a defining moment in our history. While we solemnly remember the devastation, we also celebrate how far we've come and the unbreakable resilience of Territorians," said Mrs. Finocchiaro.

"We honour those we lost, we pay tribute to those who stayed and rebuilt, and we celebrate the spirit of a city that refused to be defeated."

The 50th-anniversary commemorations have featured a series of heartfelt events, honouring lives lost, recognising the courage of survivors, and celebrating a community that rose from the ruins stronger than ever.

The Cyclone Tracy memorial stands not just as a monument, but as a timeless symbol of strength, reflection, and remembrance-a tribute to those who endured, survived, and rebuilt a brighter future for Darwin.
