Cyclone Tracy exhibition opens at Library & Archives NT

9 November 2024

As Darwin marks the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy, a new exhibition opens at the Northern Territory Library today to commemorate the historic event.

The 'One Family's Story: Remembering Cyclone Tracy' exhibition by Library & Archives NT features a collection of never-before-seen photographs.

It offers a personal glimpse into the experiences of the Fitzsimmons family during Cyclone Tracy, from enjoying Christmas Eve festivities to the chaos and destruction of what remains one of the worst weather events in Australia's history.

"Our family was very fortunate to survive Cyclone Tracy, but we're acutely aware of the devastation it caused to the lives of many others," said Joan Fitzsimmons.

"Looking at the photos brings back vivid memories of us seeking shelter and waiting to see what was left once the storm had passed.

"It also reminds me of the relief we experienced in the aftermath and some of the lighter moments, such as my daughters finding their belated Christmas presents amidst the debris and having fun dressing up as children do."

Minister for Arts Jinson Charls was grateful to the family for donating the collection of powerful images.

"This exhibition provides the community the opportunity to reflect on the profound loss and the courage of those who lived through Cyclone Tracy," said Mr Charls.

"The exhibition not only commemorates those lost, but also stands as a tribute to the survivors and the unwavering strength and determination of the community to come together and rebuild Darwin.

"Territorians have always been known for their remarkable resilience and this exhibition reinforces the incredible impact that a strong community spirit can have in the face of adversity."

The free exhibition, donated to Library & Archives by Joan Fitzsimmons and her family, offers a unique opportunity to connect with a piece of history that has left a lasting mark on the Territory.

The exhibition runs from 9 November to 24 December, 2024.
