Daly River Region: Alcohol, Drug Seizures

The Northern Territory Police Force has seized a substantial amount of alcohol and illicit drugs intended for distribution within remote communities in the Daly River region.

At 10pm last night, members from Drug and Organised Crime, Serious Crime, Strike Force Trident and Peppimenarti police established a roadblock along the Daly River access road. During the roadblock, two vehicles failed to stop and were apprehended after the successful deployment of tyre deflation devices.

The first vehicle was discovered to be transporting the following:

  • Six ounces of cannabis
  • Six one litre bottles of liquor
  • Two 30 pack cartons of beer
  • Two bottles of wine

The vehicle was seized, and the 24-year-old male driver was arrested. He has been charged with multiple driving, drug and alcohol offences and remains in police custody.

The male driver of the second vehicle fled into bushland and remains outstanding. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered:

  • 11 one litre bottles of liquor
  • One ten pack of pre-mixed drinks
  • Two cans of beer

The vehicle was seized, and investigations remain ongoing.

Acting Superintendent Erica Gibson said, "We know the harm that illicit drugs and alcohol cause to our communities, and I commend the excellent work of police to intercept these vehicles before they could reach their destinations.

"The Northern Territory Police Force will continue working tirelessly to prevent the distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol into remote communities.

"We will be out and about when you don't expect it, protecting communities and disrupting this disgraceful behaviour.

"If you have any information regarding the distribution of drugs or alcohol into remote communities, please contact police on 131 444."
