A 29-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicenced driving, evading and obstructing police following a traffic incident encompassing Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich suburbs yesterday afternoon.
It will be alleged the man was driving a white Mazda station wagon bearing false registration plates when he was observed driving erratically and dangerously, including weaving in and out of traffic and mounting footpaths in Brisbane and Logan. Polair monitored the vehicle where it was allegedly observed travelling at speed on the wrong side of the Warrego Highway at Karalee.
The man failed to stop when directed by police and a tyre deflation device was successfully deployed.
The station wagon collided with another vehicle, a Dodge Ram, at Karalee, causing it to roll several times before the Mazda caught fire. Officers were able to put the fire out and provide assistance to the occupants until emergency services arrived.
The occupant from the Dodge, a 49-year-old Glenvale man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The driver of the Mazda was taken to Ipswich Hospital and later discharged. The passenger, a 37-year-old Wilsonton Heights woman, was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital and remains in a critical condition.
The man was refused police bail and will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court tomorrow, Monday November 15. Police appeal for witnesses who saw or have dashcam vision of the white Mazda station wagon, Queensland registration 036VSQ to come forward.
