Darwin Man Charged With People Smuggling Offence

The AFP has charged a Northern Territory man with a people smuggling offence after executing a search warrant in Darwin yesterday (1 August, 2024).

The Johnston man, 22, was arrested yesterday and is scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on 20 August, 2024.

He has been charged with one count of people smuggling, contrary to section 233A(1) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years' imprisonment.

The AFP has a trusted and long-standing relationship with Indonesian National Police and will work closely with authorities to target people smugglers.

Inquiries are continuing in Australia and offshore.
