Darwin Women To Be Celebrated At Annual Walk

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin, in collaboration with United Nations Association of Australia (NT Division) and the Northern Territory Government Office of Gender, Equity and Diversity, invites everyone to celebrate International Women's Day by attending the annual walk through the city centre on Saturday, 8 March 2025.

International Women's Day is a global celebration of women all over the world which seeks to unite friends, colleagues and communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.

City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said International Women's Day was a time to celebrate the achievements of women who have changed history, as well as those who will advance gender equality in the future.

"City of Darwin is committed to advocating for gender equality, and the International Women's Day Walk is a great opportunity to bring people together from all walks of life to think, act and be gender-inclusive," Mr Vatskalis said.

"This year's event features a range of fantastic entertainment, including information stalls, City of Darwin's Fun Bus for little ones to enjoy, roving performances and a free community BBQ.

"The walk will be led by the Darwin City Brass Band and there are long and short options available.

"Dr Ella Stack was the first female Lord Mayor of an Australian capital city, and the first Lord Mayor of City of Darwin, and International Women's Day provides a great opportunity to celebrate the progress made by women such as Dr Stack," he said.

The theme for International Women's Day 2025 is For all women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment, aimed at unlocking equal rights, power and opportunities for all.

Free bus travel is available on the day and attendees are encouraged to wear purple and bring banners, as well as hats and water bottles.
