Dean Winter Sitting On Fence On Drug Use

Tasmanian Government

282 days have passed since Dean Winter became Leader of the Labor Party, and Tasmanians still have no idea where he stands on decriminalising drugs and pill testing.

Minister for Minister Police, Fire, and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said that it's time for Labor to come clean on their position on drug use.

"Does Mr Winter endorse his Party's policies to allow public access to drug testing facilities and decriminalisation of illicit drugs?" Minister Ellis said.

"Pill testing serves as quality assurance for drug traffickers and sends the message that there are safe levels of usage of hard and dangerous drugs. Science and tragic circumstances have taught us that that's simply not the case.

"Our position has always remained the same: drugs are illegal for a reason - they cause addiction and destroy lives, while lining the pockets of criminals.

"Under our watch, hard drugs will not be legalised.

"With Labor increasingly playing footsie with the Greens in Parliament, Tasmanians are rightly wondering what our streets would look like under a Labor Green accord.

"We already know that the Greens are determined to legalise drugs despite these issues– the question is, does the new Labor leader, Mr Winter, stand with them?"
