Tatauranga umanga Māori - Statistics on Māori businesses: December 2023 quarter presents information on one subset of Māori businesses that contribute to our country's economy. This release includes data on Māori authorities and related businesses. It does not cover all Māori businesses in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Māori authorities are defined as businesses that receive, manage, and/or administer assets held in common ownership by iwi and Māori. Māori authorities are largely identified through their tax codes as registered with Inland Revenue. Any business within a Māori authority ownership group is also included for the purposes of Tatauranga umanga Māori.
Key facts
In the December 2023 quarter, around 1,350 Māori authorities and related businesses were in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population.
All figures are actual values and are not adjusted for seasonal effects.
In the December 2023 quarter compared with the December 2022 quarter:
- the total value of sales by Māori authorities was $1,189 million, up $186 million (19 percent)
- the total value of purchases by Māori authorities was $865 million, up $26 million (3.1 percent)
- the total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities was 11,870, up 50 jobs (0.5 percent)
- the total value of earnings by employees of Māori authorities was $220 million, up $8.5 million (4.0 percent)
- Māori authorities exported $187 million worth of goods, down $5 million (2.7 percent).

Due to the small number of Māori authorities in the Tatauranga umanga Māori population, some industries have been grouped together to allow more data to be released.
- Primary industries grouping includes businesses involved in farming, forestry, fishing, and mining.
- Goods-producing industries includes businesses involved in manufacturing; utilities such as electricity, gas, water, and waste services; and construction.
- Services industries includes businesses involved in health care and social assistance, real estate, travel agencies, and management services ‒ for example, head offices.

For the December 2023 quarter compared with the December 2022 quarter, the total value of sales by Māori authorities and related businesses rose $186 million.
By industry, the largest movements were:
- primary industries, up $68 million (23 percent)
- health care and social assistance, up $38 million (26 percent)
- arts, recreation, and other services, up $30 million (81 percent).
Note that sales reported here may include donations and government funding. These funding sources are more prevalent in services industries.

Business employment data
For Māori authorities and related businesses in the December 2023 quarter compared with the December 2022 quarter:
- the number of filled jobs for women was 6,650, up 100 jobs (1.5 percent)
- the number of filled jobs for men was 5,220, down 40 jobs (0.8 percent)
- the value of total earnings for women was $111 million, up $7.3 million (7.0 percent)
- the value of total earnings for men was $109 million, up $1.2 million (1.1 percent).
The total number of filled jobs for Māori authorities and related businesses rose by 50 jobs in the December 2023 quarter compared with the December 2022 quarter. The movements by industry group were:
- primary industries, up 140 jobs (4.7 percent)
- goods-producing industries, down 370 jobs (30 percent)
- services industries, up 280 jobs (3.7 percent).

Total earnings for employees of Māori authorities and related businesses rose $8 million to $220 million in the December 2023 quarter compared with the December 2022 quarter. The movements in earnings by industry group were:
- primary industries, up $4.2 million (7.7 percent)
- goods-producing industries, down $8.0 million (33 percent)
- services industries, up $12 million (9.3 percent).

Goods exports
In the December 2023 quarter compared with the December 2022 quarter, the value of:
- total goods exports by Māori authorities was $187 million, down $5 million (2.7 percent)
- exports of milk powder, butter, and cheese was $57 million, up $12 million (27 percent)
- exports of all other goods was $130 million, down $17 million (12 percent); other goods exported by Māori authorities include kaimoana (seafood), meat, machinery, and wine.
Note that goods may be exported by businesses in both the primary industries (for example, livestock or unprocessed seafood), and the goods-producing industries (for example, meat, dairy products, and wine).

We have updated and made corrections to data for this release, and therefore some data will differ from that presented in previous releases. Updates to data only affect results for the June 2023 quarter.
Changes to business classifications
Some industry movements in this release reflect changes to business classifications introduced in Tatauranga umanga Māori - Statistics on Māori businesses: September 2023 quarter. Stats NZ classifies businesses to the industry that best represents their predominant activity in each period.

The population of Māori authorities is updated every year for the annual Tatauranga umanga Māori release, and for the subsequent June quarter release. The next update to the quarterly population will be implemented in Tatauranga umanga Māori: Statistics on Māori businesses: June 2024 quarter.
