Walk-in campers and canyoners can once again enjoy Deep Pass in Wollemi National Park, with the canyon now re-opened following a significant rockfall and the installation of a new toilet at the adjacent campground.
The popular canyon was closed in August due to the rockfall event, which required expert geotechnical assessments and remediation.
Just in time for Christmas and the summer period, campers visiting the World Heritage listed national park will also benefit from a newly installed toilet at the campground. This facility replaces the previous one which was destroyed in December 2019 during the Gosper Mountain bushfire.
Installing the new toilet was a major logistical effort. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff successfully transported the nearly 900kg structure by helicopter and then positioned on pre-constructed footings. The innovative design includes tanks that can be easily slid in and out from beneath the structure and flown out for servicing.
Bookings are required for the walk-in campground, which offers unmarked sites suitable for tents only.
Visitors to Deep Pass Canyon are advised the remote track is unmarked and can be subject to hazards including exposed cliff edges, flooding, treefall and rockfall.
Visitors are reminded to check NPWS alerts before they travel for the latest safety information and to plan their trip in advance.
