Delivering Our Commitment On ADHD Medication Access

Simon Behrakis, Liberal Member for Clark

The Tasmanian Government is making it easier for people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to get the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

The Department of Health has now commenced the necessary changes to make it easier for specialists and GPs to prescribe ADHD medications – in line with our 100 day plan.

The change will enable specialists and GPs with Special Interests in ADHD and the appropriate training to be authorised to prescribe medications for up to three years, increased from the current two years.

Liberal Member for Clark, Simon Behrakis, welcomed the change and said it was another important part of the Tasmanian Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.

"This will support better access to treatment and better health outcomes for people with ADHD in Tasmania, which will be warmly welcomed by those with ADHD across the State" Mr Behrakis said.

"Importantly, it will also further support specialists and GPs with the appropriate training to manage patients with ADHD, and is the first step in the Tasmanian Government's wider commitment to improving services for people with ADHD.

"I look forward to continuing this work through the Tasmanian Parliamentary Committee reviewing the availability and efficiency of the assessment, treatment and support services for people with ADHD."

The Government is also progressing plans to deliver a new GP specialist service for children with ADHD, ensuring families can access GPs with special interests sooner.
