Demolition crews are onsite at the Portsmith Transfer Station, clearing damaged structures to assist with fully extinguishing the remains of the fire at the Bedminster Advanced Resource Recovery Facility (ARRF).
The ARRF operator, Veolia, has confirmed demolition crews started work yesterday afternoon to clear the collapsed roof to provide better access for Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) crews.
The fire, which started about 8pm on 23 January, caused the building roof structure to collapse, preventing fire crews to safely access some areas, which have continued to smoulder.
Smoke may continue to affect the surrounding areas over the coming days.
Onsite crews are monitoring the smoke with results indicating that the emissions do not pose a public health risk.
Residents in smoke affected areas – especially those with health conditions, those over 65, infants and children, and pregnant women – are advised to close windows and doors and keep respiratory medications close by if required.
The Portsmith Transfer Station and the Buy Back Shop will remain closed until further notice.
Council is working closely with the Queensland Fire Department and Veolia to ensure the site is secure and safe, and to determine when the Portsmith Transfer Station can be reopened to the public.
Council has deployed additional staff to the Smithfield and Gordonvale Transfer Stations (open seven days a week from 8.30am to 5.15pm) to assist with potential extra demand.
Importantly, there is no impact on kerbside waste collection – residents are advised to place their waste and recycling bins on the kerb as usual.
Investigations are continuing into the cause of the fire.
Council and Veolia have been working with the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation to monitor the site and ensure environmental compliance.
Council and Veolia would like to thank the Cairns community for their patience and understanding.
