In a historic announcement on New Year's Eve, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark revealed her decision to abdicate the throne after a remarkable 52-year reign, passing the Crown to her son, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik.

The succession of the throne on 14 January means that Hobart-born Mary Donaldson, Crown Prince Frederik's wife, will soon ascend to the esteemed title of Queen.

In celebration of this momentous occasion and in recognition of the deep ties between Hobart and Copenhagen, the City of Hobart and the City of Copenhagen are proud to announce a special gift for the future King and Queen of Denmark.

To mark the succession to the throne, the City of Hobart and the City of Copenhagen will each be planting a significant tree within their respective city.

After careful and thoughtful consideration, the City of Hobart will be planting a blue gum (eucalyptus globulus), which is Tasmania's floral emblem, at a later date in a suitable location accessible to the public.

In Copenhagen, the gift will need to be politically approved by the Copenhagen City Council after the succession of the throne.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said it was an honour to mark her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary's ascension to the throne of Denmark.

"Hobart is immensely proud of future Queen Mary's Tasmanian roots, and we are excited to celebrate this joyous occasion with a meaningful gesture that reflects our shared history and connection," Cr Reynolds said.

"This gift not only symbolizes the warmth and friendship between Hobart and Copenhagen but also aligns with the City of Hobart's commitment to environmental sustainability, which is outlined in both our Street Tree Strategy and our Climate Strategy and aligns with the Crown Prince's commitment to climate change" Cr Reynolds said.

"Our Street Tree strategy and Climate Strategy drive us to enhance the greenery of our urban landscape, and by gifting trees, we contribute to a healthier and more beautiful future for Hobart."

The City of Hobart's Our Street Tree strategy aims to expand the tree canopy covering the city to 40 per cent by 2046.

Cr Reynolds said this gift had a broader impact.

"By planting more trees in our urban areas, we contribute to cleaner air, improved health, and a more liveable Hobart for generations to come," she said.

"It's a significant step towards combating climate change and enhancing our overall well-being. Our community can also contribute to increasing how many trees are planted each year by donating to Our City Canopy."

The City of Hobart is honoured to be a part of this historic moment and looks forward to continuing its commitment to sustainability and fostering connections with cities around the world.
