Today, Canada's Deputy Clerk to the Privy Council, and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister, Nathalie G. Drouin, issued the following statement:
"Today, I convened a meeting of G7 National Security Advisors (NSAs) and Ukraine to discuss the recent missile attack on Ukraine and the need to reach a just, comprehensive, and permanent end to Russia's war of aggression.
"Yesterday's missile attack against an urban centre was an act of violence that claimed the lives of innocent civilians and left many more injured. The attack occurred during a religious holiday, and at a time when the United States is working to achieve a ceasefire. We expressed our deepest sympathies to Ukraine, and I unequivocally condemned Russia's actions, which can serve only to perpetuate the war. We emphasized the critical importance of maintaining strong and coordinated pressure on Russia - including through sanctions, economic and energy measures, and ongoing military support to Ukraine.
"I reiterated Canada's steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine and emphasized the importance of holding Russia accountable for its ongoing aggression. I will continue to engage closely with G7 NSAs and Ukrainian partners on this critical issue."
