Today, Canada's Deputy Clerk to the Privy Council, and National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister, Nathalie G. Drouin, issued the following statement:
"Today, I convened a second meeting of G7 National Security Advisors (NSAs) and Ukraine to discuss the ongoing peace talks to reach a just, comprehensive, and permanent end to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
"I welcomed the latest efforts by the United States and Ukraine in advancing a ceasefire, including the technical-level talks held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from March 23 to 25, 2025. We discussed the need to continue building momentum for these efforts, including the importance of confidence-building measures. I underscored the necessity of robust and credible security arrangements to ensure that Ukraine can deter and defend against any renewed acts of aggression and emphasized the importance of upholding or expanding sanctions against Russia during this critical time. I also expressed appreciation for the leadership of the UK and France to advance efforts on peace and security for Ukraine, including security guarantees.
"I reaffirmed Canada's unwavering support for Ukraine and that Russia must be held to account for their acts of aggression against Ukraine. I will remain in close and regular contact with the G7 NSAs and Ukraine on this critical issue.
