The Tasmanian Liberal Government is focused on making our roads safer and more efficient.
At last year's State election we made a $50,000 commitment to improve pedestrian safety at Exeter as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
Concept designs to improve pedestrian crossing facilities through the Exeter town centre have been released for public feedback.
Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said the designs included kerb extensions and pedestrian islands at several key locations to improve safety through Main Road, Exeter.
"We are pleased to share concept designs for these important pedestrian crossing upgrades in Exeter," Minister Vincent said.
"The need for improved pedestrian facilities was identified by the community and in our West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy, which looked at potential safety upgrades between Launceston and Beauty Point. I thank the community for their input.
"The proposed locations for each crossing upgrade were chosen based on traffic and pedestrian volumes through the Exeter town centre, as well as past engagement with the local community.
"Designs are expected to be finalised later this year following community feedback and we expect construction will begin early next year," he said.
Other forms of pedestrian crossing, including a signalised crossing, were considered through the design process. The designs being released today will mean greater cost of construction, but with benefits to pedestrians along a much longer distance of the shopping district - from the Frankford Road right through to Glen Ard Mohr Road. The Department advises that the designs balance the need for both increased pedestrian safety in the Exeter township with the West Tamar Highway being a strategic transport route for locals, tourists and heavy freight vehicles.
Liberal Member for Bass, Michael Ferguson, said he was really pleased to see this election commitment being delivered for the Exeter community.
"As a Local Member for Bass, I know the community have been quite keen to see these pedestrian upgrades completed as soon as possible," Mr Ferguson said
"I would urge people with an interest in shaping these upgrades to check out the concept designs and provide feedback if necessary."
Concept designs and further project information are now available on the Transport website:
