Whitehorse Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after an attempted carjacking in a fast-food restaurant car park in Forest Hill on Sunday, 5 January.
Investigators have been told the two victims were sitting inside their vehicle in the car park on Canterbury Road about 8.10pm.
The victims noticed a black Mercedes pull into the park next to them, and watched a male offender get out of the car and approach their car window.
The offender told the victims to 'get out of the car' and tried opening the car doors before brandishing a knife and piercing the vehicle's rear passenger tyre.
The victims called Triple Zero (000) and the offender got back into the Mercedes.
Shortly after, a white Volkswagen Golf pulled into the car park on the other side of the victim's vehicle and a man got out and handed the offender in the Mercedes a glass-breaking tool.
The offender from the Mercedes approached the victim's car again and smashed the driver side window and unlocked the door, grabbing the car keys.
The offender, who was still holding the knife, told the victims to 'get out of the vehicle' when sirens began to blare in the distance.
It is believed the offender was spooked by the advancing police presence and returned the car keys to the victim and fled in the Mercedes, as the occupants in the Volkswagen also drove off.
The victims, a 20-year-old man from Mill Park and a 20-year-old woman from Sale, were not injured however were severely distressed from the ordeal.
Detectives have released two facial composite images of men they wish to speak to in relation to the incident.
The first image depicts the male offender from the Mercedes who is described as Caucasian, in his late 20's, with a thin build, short, sandy/brown hair and wearing a grey hooded jumper.
The second image depicts the man from the Volkswagen who is described as Caucasian, in his early 20's, with a rotted front tooth and wearing a beanie and a dark puffer jacket.
It is believed there was also another man and woman in the Volkswagen at the time of the incident.
