Developers picked to revitalise old Kinlock Primary School site

  • New affordable housing development just 12km from the Perth CBD
  • Kinlock project will see well-designed density and a focus on community involvement
  • An exciting new land and housing development will create an inviting and well-connected community on the former Kinlock Primary School site in Ferndale.

The Kinlock Infill Development will provide increased housing diversity, choice and affordability in line with the State Government's Affordable Housing Action Plan 2017-18 to 2019-20, which is led by the Department of Communities.

The Department has appointed Yolk Property Group and Ventura Homes Group as the project managers for the development and it will work closely with them to deliver approximately 90 residential lots in diverse sizes and prices to suit a range of people, lifestyles and budgets.

The development will offer a range of house and land packages and vacant lots, with an appropriate mix of lots allocated for social housing. The majority of the house and land packages will be sold below the median Perth house price - increasing the supply and diversity of affordable housing for Western Australians.

To better meet the changing needs of occupants over their lifetimes and provide versatility for people with mobility impairment, every social housing dwelling will incorporate liveable design features. These features will also be available for people who purchase house and land packages.

The Department is also investigating opportunities to include sustainability initiatives which will benefit future residents and compliment the unique character of the area. This may include sustainable power generation, the promotion of urban tree canopies, and pedestrian-friendly street designs.

The first stage of land development is planned for the 2020-21 financial year and will see the release of approximately 35 lots.  For a wide range of affordable housing options, visit http://www.openingdoorswa.com.au

As stated by Housing Minister Peter Tinley:

"The Kinlock Infill Development is a great example of the McGowan Government working with the private sector to provide a diverse range of living options only 12km from the Perth CBD.

"Projects like Kinlock help meet demand for affordable housing and allow people to live close to where they work, where they grew up and where their family and friends reside.

"The Department of Communities, Yolk Property Group and Ventura Homes Group will apply 'One Planet Living' sustainability principles to respect local identity and encourage community involvement.

"This approach will see an emphasis on sustainable land, material and water use, as well as waste reduction.

"The Kinlock project will also include consultation with the local community to ensure the development complements and enhances Ferndale's character and residents' sense of place."

As stated by Cannington MLA Bill Johnston:

"I'm pleased that the Minister shares my commitment to ensuring this development is conducted in full consultation with the Ferndale community.

"I'm excited to see a high quality development at Kinlock become a valued addition to the Ferndale community.

"Infill development like this means young people can live close to the CBD, which is important for the continued liveability of our city. It's fantastic that the McGowan Government is conducting this infill in a way that is sensitive to the needs of the community."
