The Law Council of Australia welcomes the appointment of the Immediate Past Chair of its Family Law Section, Ms Dianne Simpson, as a Judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1).
"Di is a passionate advocate who has dedicated her career to helping those in need and reforming family law in this country," Law Council of Australia President, Mr Greg McIntyre SC said.
"She has been a trusted advisor and expert at both the ACT and national level, serving on the ACT Law Society's Family Law Committee since 2012 and the Law Council's Family Law Section Executive since 2016.
"Di became the Deputy Chair of the Law Council's Family Law Section in December 2020 and its Chair in June 2021 – a position she held until this month.
"Di has been integral to our advocacy on some of the most significant and impactful developments in family law. This has included improving access to justice for the most vulnerable members of our community, contributing to progressive reforms to family law and its administration, and assisting in the development of the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children."
In 2023, Ms Simpson's was the recipient of the Law Council of Australia's President Award in recognition of her contribution and achievements.
"From my own personal experience working with Di, I believe she is an exceptional appointment," Mr McIntyre said. "Her knowledge of the law, empathy, grace and sound judgement will serve those who come before her well.
"On behalf of the national legal profession, I congratulate Di on her appointment."
