Logan City Council is going underground to keep Rochedale South safer in storms.
A $15.8 million upgrade is underway to provide improved flood protection in the Woodlands Drive stormwater catchment.
The works include the installation of specially constructed three-metre underground pipelines to convey stormwater and mitigate future flood events.
Council will also install or upgrade other drainage infrastructure, replace sections of kerb and footpaths and improve the existing drainage outlet in Woodlands Park.
Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said the Woodlands Drive Master Drainage Project is designed to give Rochedale South residents peace of mind.
"Once completed, these works will go a long way towards mitigating flash flooding events in the vicinity of Woodlands Drive," Cr Lane said.
"This is one of the larger and more complex flood mitigation projects that Council has undertaken.
"It means there will be road and footpath diversions and the temporary loss of some bus stops and car spaces during the works.
"We understand the disruption these measures will cause but the long-term benefits for impacted residents make the works worth it."
Division One Councillor Lisa Bradley welcomed the upgrade works.
"Over the years I've been aware during heavy rain of a number of properties that have had water in their homes," Cr Bradley said.
"This project will provide better flood protection for the road corridor and will be welcomed by residents affected by extreme wet weather events."
Works will be done in Woodlands Drive, Hartog Place, William Street and Lancelot Street.
Woodlands Park will be closed for the duration of the works and there will be reduced speed limits, progressive road and footpath closures and traffic detours.
