Director-General condemns killing of journalist Edwin Josué Andino in Honduras

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has called for an investigation into the murder of television journalist Edwin Josué Andino, who was killed along with his father in the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, on 10 October.
I condemn the killing of Edwin Josué Andino. It demonstrates the brutality that threatens not only media workers themselves, but their families as well. I call on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this crime and its motives. Bringing its perpetrators to trial is essential to the protection of media freedom in the country.
Audrey Azoulay UNESCO Director-General

Unknown assailants reportedly dressed in police uniforms attacked Andino, a 23-year-old journalist for television news channel La Tribuna TV (LTV), and his father in their home and shot them dead on the street outside. Their bodies were recovered in different neighbourhoods of Tegucigalpa.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
