UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the killing of journalist Shashikant Warishe in the Indian state of Maharashtra on 6 February.
I condemn the murder of Shashikant Warishe. I call on the authorities to ensure that the perpetrator of this crime is brought to justice. Shashikant Warishe, a journalist for the Marathi-language newspaper Mahangari Times, was run down on a highway and later succumbed to his injuries.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
