Disc Golf Takes Flight In Horsham

It's an exciting time for Horsham's disc golf enthusiasts.

Local advocate of the game, Dean O'Loughlin has worked with Horsham Rural City Council to establish a disc golf course at Haven Recreation Reserve.

Disc golf, also known as frisbee golf, is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target and it is played using rules similar to golf.

HRCC has worked with Mr O'Loughlin to maintain the area where the game is played, and to explore new areas to play and purchase new equipment. The project has also received a grant from the Horsham Sports & Community Club.

Disc golf is an emerging pastime in several regional areas, with already established groups in the Ballarat and Bendigo areas. Horsham's own burgeoning disc golf scene has been growing rapidly, and the demand for Horsham's own play area is obvious.

"It's a great way to spend a Sunday," Mr O'Loughlin said.

"It's a fantastic family game that anyone can pick up quickly, it promotes incidental play and gets more people physically active without the strain of more competitive sports."

"There is essentially a 200km radius around Horsham with nowhere to play. This will attract players who don't have access to the established areas, and will cater to enthusiasts who pass through Horsham every day," he said.

If you would like the get involved and pick up a new hobby, the Disc Golf at Haven Recreation Reserve Facebook group host come and try days. While none are currently scheduled, keep an eye on the feed.
