Disqualified driver charged after pursuit at Wollongong

A man disqualified from driving until 2041 has been charged after a pursuit in the Illawarra yesterday.

About 5pm (Tuesday 28 December 2021), officers attached to Traffic South Highway Patrol were conducting patrols in the Corrimal area, when they saw a man driving a silver Holden sedan on Rothery Street.

When checks revealed the man was disqualified from driving until 2041, officers directed the driver to pull over; however, it will be alleged he accelerated away, reaching speeds of up to 120km/h in a 50km/h signposted area.

The sedan was located a short time later in a cul de sac in Bellambi, with the driver arrested on Bramsen Street.

A 36-year-old man returned a positive roadside drug test and was arrested.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he underwent a secondary oral fluid sample; the results of which will undergo further analysis. The man was immediately banned from driving for 24 hours.

The man was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period (second offence), and drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous (second offence).

The Bellambi man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 29 December 2021).

Police are now awaiting the results of the secondary drug test.
