  • District Court of Western Australia Judge appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court
  • Judge Michael Gething brings extensive court experience to the position

Attorney General John Quigley has announced the appointment of Judge Michael Gething as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

Judge Gething has served as a District Court Judge for the past nine years and will begin in his new role in the Supreme Court on 14 January 2025.

He replaces Justice Gail Archer in the Supreme Court's General Division. Justice Archer has been appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal.

Judge Gething already had a strong background in the court system prior to becoming a Judge.

He was principal registrar of the District Court between 2004 and 2013 and of the Supreme Court across the next two years.

During this period, he performed the duties of a registrar while also providing leadership and support to other registrars. He also managed registrar resources to ensure that the Court's caseload was dealt with efficiently and effectively. In addition, Judge Gething mediated a range of complex matters.

While a principal registrar, Judge Gething served as a Commissioner of the District Court's criminal jurisdiction from 2008 to 2013 and of its civil jurisdiction from November 2011 to July 2012.

Before becoming a principal registrar, Judge Gething spent a decade at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, where he worked as a solicitor, counsel and as its regional commissioner in WA.

Admitted to practice in 1991, Judge Gething has also previously lectured at the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

"I welcome Judge Michael Gething as a new Judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

"His Honour has had a distinguished and lengthy career and is highly regarded in the legal field.

"The in-depth expertise he gained as principal registrar of the District and Supreme Courts for more than a decade culminated in his appointment as a District Court Judge in February 2016.

"Judge Gething's subsequent experience in the judiciary will help underpin his Honour's smooth transition to the Supreme Court and assist in continuing to manage its significant caseloads."
